Yakiniku is a style of communal Japanese BBQ where you grill thin slices of steak and serve those slices tossed or dipped in a tasty sauce. Typical accompaniments include veggies, steamed rice, and lettuce leaves for crafting wraps. Our smoky and garlicky grille sauce makes a great base for yakiniku. Just add a little mirin, soy sauce, sesame seeds, and a little applesauce for sweetness. That slight touch of chipotle heat is a really tasty touch.

Serves 6
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon mirin
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 tablespoons applesauce
1 teaspoon white sesame seeds
1lb. well-marbled steak (filet or tri-tip), thinly sliced
White rice, green lettuce leaves, mushrooms, egg yolk and other assorted vegetables for grilling
Instructions
Place the grille sauce, mirin, soy sauce, applesauce, and sesame seeds in a medium bowl. Whisk to combine and refrigerate until ready to serve. Preheat an indoor electric grill, grill pan, or (for outside cooking) grill to medium heat. Once hot, grill the thinly sliced pieces of meat until tender. Toss or dip the meat into the yakiniku sauce. Grill the accompanying veggies and dip into the sauce as well. Serve with rice, lettuce leaves, and raw egg yolk (if desired).
